After a big day of driving on our first day we made it to Mildura……not ideal conditions for our first night in the camper trailer as it was drizzling with rain, cold and getting quite dark when we arrived. I was tempted to get a cabin for the night but everyone else was keen to camp. It rained quite heavily over night but everything stayed dry. We were really pleased with how the car and trailer were travelling.
Next day we travelled on following the Murray through gorgeous fertile land with lots of grape vines, orange groves and olives. At the border of South Australia we had to hand over any fresh fruit and vegetables we’d packed. I hadn’t realised so we had quite a bit and it took a bit of unpacking to get to it all.
A highlight of the day was visiting Burra which is an old copper mining town and has beautiful old sandstone buildings. We spent a while exploring the old mine which the girls really enjoyed. Again when we got to Peterborough it was getting dark and drizzling with light rain. After setting up we visited our friends and had a lovely dinner at the local pub with them. It was freezing cold overnight so everyone had lots of layers on!
Wednesday was a big day of driving as well. After we looked at the Peterborough Federation Quilt we drove past the gorgeous Flinders Ranges which is on our list of places to visit…….next time!!
Lunch at Hawker near Flinders Ranges
Big Gum Tree
We looked at the huge coal mine at Leigh Creek and the girls were amazed by the size of the tyres for the machinery and then camped at Lyndhurst which is the end of the bitumen road.
To quote Kate…”Mum, compared to the other caravan parks this is really just a piece of land with a sign”. Exactly right and with loads of trucks coming and going all night and one refrigerated one that sat there with it’s engine going constantly!! Mal did go into the bar for a beer and was certainly entertained by clientele! The worst thing tonight though was our good camera being dropped (not by me) and the lens snapping off………..deep breathes!!!
But on a much brighter note……..the girls are really enjoying their new cameras…

What a great start to your trip. Travel safe.
What a fantastic experience, very jealous in our house. Pictures are great despite not having the use of the good camera. Love the muddy shoes! Red dirt it still appears in our house.
